Iran, UN discuss latest developments in Syria

Tehran, IRNA – Senior officials from the Iranian Foreign Ministry and the United Nations have held a video conference to discuss the latest developments in the Arab country.

During the virtual meeting held on Monday, Ali Asghar Khaji, who serves as a senior aide to Iranian foreign minister, and UN Secretary General’s special envoy for Syria Geir Otto Pedersen emphasized the importance of resolving the Syrian crisis through political talks.

The two officials discussed the latest developments on the field in Syria as well as political and humanitarian issues in the Arab country and stressed the need for efforts to work out a political solution to the crisis.

Khaji and Pedersen also discussed the return of refugees to Syria as well as efforts needed to solve the country's economic problems.

The Iranian diplomat referred to the difficult economic situation of the Syrian people and called for the removal of unjust sanctions imposed by Western countries on Damascus. He also called for an end to the looting of Syria’s natural resources by external forces that are present in the country while urging the need for provision of international humanitarian aid to the Syrians.

Khaji also stressed the need to fight terrorism and expressed hope that the UN, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and countries willing to help resolve the crisis in Syria would facilitate the return of refugees by providing assistance to the Arab country.
